'The Ming Voyages' are seven voyages undertaken by the Chinese fleet between 1405 and 1433 for the sake of trade and political influence. In this game, one player is the emperor, trying to complete all seven voyages while protecting the Chinese border from invading barbarians. The other player controls three different barbarian clans trying to win land along the Chinese border. Battles can break out in these areas and are resolved with dice rolls.
The Ming Voyages uses multi-use cards, letting the players strengthen their armies, attack the enemy and, in the emperor's case, set out on a voyage. Playing a card can give the opponent an action outside their turn, so playing the cards well takes good timing. Only the emperor draws new cards, and at the end of each turn the players swap hands. The emperor therefore always knows what the barbarians are holding, while both players try to get the most out of the cards' actions.
