All Night Breakfast at The Midnight Owl is a solo roleplaying game where you are the creator and host of a podcast about supernatural investigations. You have recently left your home and moved to a sleepy and isolated town to investigate a series of strange occurrences, hoping to find content for your podcast.
Your adventures unfold by visiting locations in and around town, gathering clues and evidence, and keeping a journal. Optional podcast and map-making elements are also available if you wish to delve deeper into the world you are creating in-game.
The narrative involves themes of the supernatural, secrets and lies, and what it feels like to be an outsider in a close-knit community. The game’s setting is inspired by the Pacific Northwest of the USA, but can be adapted to take place in any part of the world. The overall mood is reminiscent of shows like Twin Peaks, The X-Files, and True Detective, though no familiarity with these shows is presupposed.
If you have never played a journaling game before, it's worth noting that there is no right or wrong way to tell your story. It can be as simple as bullet points on a piece of paper, longer prose texts with sketches, or anything in between. You can also use digital apps to write down your story. The main purpose of this game is for it to inspire you to be creative.
