The Fellowship of the Ring: Trick-Taking Game is a cooperative card game that takes place over eighteen chapters that take players through the events of the novel The Fellowship of the Ring . The chapters can be played in any order, but ideally you play them in sequence.

In each chapter, each player takes on the role of a different character — Frodo, Gandalf, Sam, Pippin, Farmer Maggot, etc. — and each character has a condition that must be met in order to complete the chapter and progress through the story. For example, Frodo must capture ring cards, while Pippin wants to take as few tricks as possible. As you progress through the chapters, new characters, items, and challenges are introduced to the game.

The deck consists of 37 cards, with one card set aside as "lost" in each hand. Whoever gets the One Ring becomes Frodo, after which the other players choose from the available figures based on their hand. The One Ring is the game's only trump card, but initially rings cannot be played until someone plays one of a different color.

In the two-player game, a blind player is dealt a hand of cards, some cards face up and some face down. This blind player is assigned a figure, and one of the players plays cards to it based on which cards are free.

In the game of solitaire, one player plays four hands of cards face up, with each hand assigned a symbol, and only a few cards are available at a time. After you have played a trick, you deal a new card to each hand.
