Diplomacy: Era of Empire moves the classic negotiation game to Asia in 1870, where seven great powers – Great Britain, France, Russia, Turkey, China, Japan and the Netherlands – struggle for control of the Ottoman Empire, India, China, Indochina and the East Indies. It is a standalone game and does not require the original Diplomacy.
Each round opens with negotiation, in which any agreement can be made and any can be broken. The players then secretly write orders for each of their armies and fleets, and all orders are read out at the same time. All units are equally strong, so what matters is who supports whom. There are no dice. The game has 50 supply centres, and the first player to control 22 of them wins alone. Besides the basic rules there are two new ones: Conscription, which allows building in all of a player's own supply centres, and Conversion, where an army can be turned into a fleet and vice versa.
