Shogi
In stock at the following stores: Games København, Games Aarhus
Shogi, which is of Japanese origin, is played on a 9 by 9 board, and the aim is to capture the opponent's king. There are two main differences from Western chess. First, not only pawns but almost all pieces can promote if they reach the opponent's last three ranks. The second and most characteristic feature is that captured pieces become the property of the capturing player, who during his turn can "throw" or "drop" them back onto the board instead of making a normal move. Because of this feature, the game can last longer than a game of chess, the board generally stays fairly full, and there is no simplification in the endgame. The endgame is nevertheless typically faster, with many opportunities for attack and ways of achieving checkmate, which also makes draws very rare.
