Where the original The Resistance is set in a dark and gloomy future, this time the legend of the Knights of the Round Table serves as the thematic backdrop for the game.
In The Resistance: Avalon the players imagine themselves as knights of the Round Table, setting out on five missions to defeat the evil Mordred and his dark forces. Mordred's spies are everywhere, however, and even among the knights of the Round Table there are some who are not to be trusted.
In The Resistance: Avalon each player is dealt a role card at the start, which says whether they are honourable knights or despicable spies. The spies know who each other are, but the knights have nothing to go on to begin with. Over the five missions that the game lasts, the knights must deduce who they can trust. But they have to hurry. If the spies manage to sabotage three missions, the knights have lost and Mordred and the spies have won. At the same time the spies must be careful, because the knights win as soon as they have completed three missions.
The Resistance: Avalon is a game of deduction, bluff, lies, double-dealing and social interaction. It is very much a player-driven game that requires the participants to interact with each other.
The Resistance: Avalon is played in the same way as the original The Resistance, but it is not just old wine in new bottles. Avalon comes with entirely new roles such as Merlin, who knows who the spies are but must not reveal himself. This gives the game a whole new dynamic.
