In Brian Boru: High King of Ireland , you strive to unite Ireland under your domain and secure control through force, cunning, and marriage. Join forces to repel Viking raiders, build monasteries to expand your influence, and gather support in towns and villages across the land. To become High King of all Ireland, you must navigate a web of shifting alliances, outmaneuver your enemies, and seize the reins of history.
The historical Brian Boru's success rested on three pillars: his victories against the Vikings, the favor he managed to gain with the church, and the alliances he created through political marriages. This became the foundation of the game, with each pillar becoming a suit in the trick-taking that forms the core of the mechanics. Win a trick and you gain influence in a city, which in turn gives you a majority in the regions; if you lose the trick (intentionally or not), you instead take an action corresponding to the suit of the card.
