Caylus
The year is 1289, and to strengthen the borders of France, King Philip the Fair has decided to build a new castle in the humble village of Caylus. Soon, however, it will be full of workers and craftsmen seeking their fortune. The town flourishes around the building site, and in Caylus the players are master builders who work on the castle, develop the town around it and try to earn as many prestige points as possible.
Each turn the players pay their workers in the town's various buildings. These buildings let the players collect resources or money, which are then used to build the castle itself, construct new buildings or upgrade the existing ones. To win in Caylus you must find exactly the right balance between building the castle, which gives prestige points, and securing a strong resource engine.
Caylus is a classic that, more than ten years after its release, is still hugely popular with those who like heavier strategy games with plenty of planning and resource management.
