Codenames is a simple but incredibly fun party game about word associations and creative thinking.
Two teams compete against each other to win. One of the players on each team is the spymaster and knows the identity of all the spies in the network. The remaining players only know the agents' codenames. The team that first makes contact with all its agents wins the game.
At the start of the game some cards are laid out in a 5x5 square. A word is written on every card. The spymasters have a secret card that tells them which 8 cards on the table cover their agents. The spymasters now take turns to say one word and one number. The word should be associated with the right agents on the table. The number states how many cards/agents the word is associated with. It is then up to the teammates to find the right agents, but they must be careful. An assassin is hiding behind one of the words, and if that word is chosen, the team has lost. The first team to identify all its agents has won the game.
Codenames is a fantastic party game that has to be played several times in a row.
Winner of the Spiel des Jahres 2016.
