Jalape-NO!, first published as Pepper, is a trick-taking game in which you must avoid the spice in order to finish with the lowest possible score.
The game consists of 108 cards (102 number cards and 6 pepper cards). The cards are numbered 1-18 in six colours, and the 1s are peppers. Depending on the number of players, you use 4-6 colours of cards, ranging from 1-9 to 1-18.
At the start of each round you are dealt a hand of 12 cards, and you must place any peppers on the table in front of you. The player leading a trick plays any card from their hand or one of their peppers. Every other player must follow suit if possible, except that you are not forced to play the matching pepper card if you have it. (But if you have it, you cannot play a pepper of another colour to this trick.) Whoever plays the highest card in the suit led wins the trick and leads the next one. If you win a pepper in a trick, you place it on the table in front of you; you can play this pepper to a future trick, either to lead the trick or on a trick already in progress.
As soon as one player has no cards left in hand, the round ends. All players add the cards in their hand to the cards in front of them, whether these are peppers or cards taken in tricks. Each pepper you hold is worth 2 points, and each card in the same suit as a pepper you hold is worth 1 point. After five rounds, the player with the lowest score wins.
