In John Company, players are ambitious families trying to use the British East India Company for their personal gain. Over the course of the game, the company will either grow into the most powerful corporation in the world, or collapse under the weight of its ambitions.
Unlike many other business games, players do not manage their own company. Instead, they must guide the company together by securing positions of power and trying to steer the company's destiny in a direction that serves their own interests. However, it is difficult to do things alone, and players have to negotiate with each other.
John Company is not about wealth, but about reputation. In each round, some of your family members may retire and establish manors. Players have no control over when this happens. This means that you may sometimes have to borrow money from other players to make the most of the situation. Players also gain victory points by participating in the social life of London.
An engaging game that tackles themes such as imperialism, globalization, and an institution that was equally dysfunctional and influential.
