Shogi
In stock at the following stores: Games København, Games Aarhus
Shogi, which is of Japanese origin, is played on a 9x9 board, and the goal is to capture the opponent's king. There are two main differences from Western chess. First, not only pawns, but almost all pieces can move up if they reach the opponent's last three ranks. The second and most distinctive feature is that the captured pieces become the property of that player, and during his turn he can "throw" or "drop" them back onto the board instead of making a normal move. Because of this feature, the game can last longer than a chess game, the board generally remains quite full, and there is no simplification in the endgame. However, the endgame is typically faster with many options for attacks and ways to achieve checkmate, which also makes draws/draws very rare.
