Splendor (Danish)
Splendor is a family game that won a great many awards during 2014.
In Splendor the players are Renaissance merchants. As a merchant you are after the finest and most valuable gems, rubies and diamonds, so that you can impress the nobles.
On your turn you can take one of the following actions:
- Collect gems
- Use your gems to buy a development card
- Reserve a development card.
Development cards give a permanent discount on buying new cards, so that later on you can buy cards that are more expensive. In this way the game escalates, because your discounts grow every time you buy a new card.
Splendor is a very simple family game, yet it offers plenty of interesting decisions and different strategies.
The way players try to build an “engine” that makes it easier to buy cards on their following turns makes the game suitable for maths lessons. Pupils must try to buy the “right” cards, the ones that make their next purchase cheaper.
